What is Autoimmune Disease?
Your body’s immune system protects you from disease and infection. But if you have an autoimmune disease, your immune system mistakenly attacks your body. In an autoimmune disease, the immune system mistakes part of your body — like your joints or skin — as foreign. It releases proteins called autoantibodies that attack healthy cells. Some autoimmune diseases target only one organ. Type 1 diabetes damages the pancreas. Other diseases, like lupus, affect the whole body.
Some of the most common Autoimmune Conditions
Autoimmune diseases remain among the most poorly understood and poorly recognized of any category of illness. There are more than 80 different autoimmune diseases. Most of them are long-term illnesses, with the severity of symptoms changing over time.
Most common Autoimmune Diseases include:
Inflammation bowel disease (IBD)
Type 1 Diabetes
I know from experience the pain of living with an autoimmune disease. At an age of 18 I was diagnosed with psoriasis. A disease that is now being classified as an autoimmune disease.
It’s easy to think of psoriasis as just a “skin condition.” But psoriasis actually starts underneath the skin. It is a chronic (long-lasting) disease of the immune system that can range from mild to severe. While scientists do not know what exactly causes psoriasis, we do know that the immune system and genetics play major roles in its development.
Through proper supplementation, lifestyle and diet I am able to have my life back again. Therefore, I am here to help you reverse your autoimmune conditions.
Nutritional consultations for individuals
with Autoimmune Disease
Living with an autoimmune disease can be confusing and overwhelming. You might feel like you have completely lost control of your body, your health, and your life. Unfortunately, many of the conventional treatments available can make you feel worse.
There is another way to deal with autoimmune conditions by addressing the root causes of inflammation through diet, lifestyle and stress management rather than focusing on symptoms only.
Nutritional therapy is all about helping you find the optimal diet and lifestyle for your unique genetics, health issues and circumstances. It then involves helping you to implement and maintain these changes.
The Autoimmune Protocol
Nutritional therapy approach for autoimmune diseases focuses by looking at and adjusting the food you eat that can make symptoms worse, healing the gastrointestinal tract, decreasing overall inflammation in the body, and supporting the body’s adrenal glands which regulate immune function and inflammation.
Depending on your specific symptoms, you will receive a specific meal plan and diet recommendations, lifestyle changes, and herbal, vitamin and/or nutrient supplementation that work together to decrease autoimmune flare-ups, calm inflammation and prevent additional autoimmune diseases in the future.
I will probably request some tests to look further at your gut. The gut is the key of your immune system. Alterations of gut microbial communities can cause immune dysregulation, leading to autoimmune disorders. Intestinal permeability (leaky gut) has strong connection with imbalances with your immunity.
I may request a few more tests to investigate hidden infections or toxins as well.
The Factors that most affect your immune system:
Anti-inflammatory or Pro-inflammatory foods
Immune system reactions to food proteins
Gut health and ‘leaky gut’
Infectious agents such as viral or bacterial infections
Toxins such as heavy metals (mercury, lead, aluminium, arsenic) or mycotoxins
