How to Start Your Autoimmune Recovery (Without the Overwhelm)
If you’re living with an autoimmune condition and feel completely exhausted, like you’ve tried everything but nothing is working, you’re not alone. I hear this every week from people navigating psoriasis, Hashimoto’s, gut issues, or other autoimmune disease symptoms who feel stuck, frustrated, and close to giving up.
Whether you’ve been on medication for years, tried countless diets, or bounced from one specialist to another… The healing path can feel like a full-time job. And when it gets too much, most people do what I often see in my clinic: they freeze, stop everything, and just live with the symptoms.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
As an autoimmune nutritionist, I specialise in helping people create clarity, structure, and calm in their healing journey using personalised, step-by-step plans that work in real life, not just on paper. In this blog, I want to show you where to begin, especially if you’re struggling with inflammation, psoriasis, Hashimoto’s, or complex gut health issues.
Let’s talk about 5 practical first steps to kickstart your autoimmune recovery — without the overwhelm.
1. Accept That You Don’t Have to Do Everything at Once
When you feel unwell and desperate for relief, it’s tempting to want to fix everything now. But I’ve learned — both personally and from working with hundreds of clients — that sustainable recovery never happens all at once.
People often come to me saying they’ve tried “all the diets,” bought 20 supplements, followed wellness influencers, and still feel no better. The truth is, healing isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing the right things, in the right order, at the right time.
✅ Try this: Write down everything you’re currently doing (or feel pressured to do). Then choose just one area to focus on this week — maybe it’s your breakfast, or sleep, or reducing sugar.
In my clinic, I build step-by-step plans for each client, usually starting with just 2–3 focus areas per week. This approach is more effective and less stressful — and it creates real, lasting change.
To help you stay focused and track your symptoms, I created a Autoimmune Recovery Tracker Pack. It includes 15 different trackers you can choose from — for food, flares, gut symptoms, bowel movements, blood work, and more. 👉 Download your tracker pack here

2. Start with One Meal: Build a Blood Sugar-Friendly Breakfast
The quickest way to feel better is to stabilise your blood sugar and that starts with what’s on your plate first thing in the morning. Energy crashes, cravings, mood swings, and even flares can all be linked to unbalanced meals.
✅ Try this: Build a breakfast with 20–30g protein, some fibre, and healthy fats. For example: leftover roast chicken with avocado and spinach, or an AIP-friendly root veg hash with olive oil and herbs.
If you’re not sure what to eat on an anti-inflammatory or autoimmune-friendly diet, you can grab my AIP recipe eBook here. It’s filled with simple, delicious meals I use myself and with my clients.
My favourite breakfast variations include:
-
Leftover turkey or chicken with sautéed greens and roasted sweet potatoes
-
Carob collagen chia pudding with grated pear and cinnamon (great for gut health)
-
AIP lamb patties with sweet potato mash
-
Stewed apples with tigernut granola, coconut yogurt and protein powder
These meals are warm, satisfying, and won’t spike your blood sugar, making them perfect to anchor your healing routine.
3. Support Your Nervous System (Before You Add More Supplements)
Most people who come to me have spent more on supplements than they have on proper rest and that’s a problem. If your nervous system is constantly in “fight or flight,” your body won’t heal, no matter how clean your diet is.
✅ Try this: Pick one calming ritual to do daily — like a 5-minute walk without your phone, journaling before bed, or magnesium foot soaks. Prioritise sleep over screens.
In my clinic, we often work on stress management before detox, because nervous system regulation is the foundation of recovery.
Other simple nervous system tips that help my clients:
-
Dim lights after 8 PM to support melatonin and reduce cortisol
-
Use breathing techniques like 4-7-8 breathing before meals to improve digestion
-
Grounding outdoors — even 10 minutes of fresh air and sunlight can help reset your stress response
-
Avoid scrolling or news first thing in the morning — protect your energy
These small changes are easy to overlook, but they make a big difference in how your body feels and heals.
4. Don’t Try to Change Everything — Swap Slowly
I never tell clients to “cut out everything” on day one. If you’re going to sustain lifestyle changes — whether it’s diet, movement, or mindset — you need to find alternatives you enjoy.
✅ Try this: Instead of saying “no sugar,” try: “What’s one naturally sweet food I can swap in today?” Instead of “I have to exercise,” ask: “What kind of movement do I like?”
This is the mindset we use in my 3-month Autoimmune Health Programme. You don’t need to be perfect, just consistent. We make changes slowly, based on your preferences and symptoms.
5. Get Support — and Community
You’re not meant to figure this all out alone. Healing can feel isolating, especially when others don’t understand what you’re going through. That’s why having the right support system is so important.
✅ Try this: Join a Facebook group for people with your condition. Follow recovery accounts. Read success stories. Speak to others on the same path. You are not alone.
And when you’re ready, get professional support. As an autoimmune nutritionist, I help people take the guesswork out of healing with personalised protocols, functional testing, and regular 1:1 check-ins.
If you’re tired of Googling and trying random things that don’t work, my Autoimmune Health Programme is designed to guide you through recovery, step by step. You’ll get:
-
A clear action plan
-
Support with testing (only when needed)
-
Weekly check-ins to stay on track
-
Adjustments based on how you respond
You’re not just handed a plan, we walk through it together.
Final Thoughts
Autoimmune recovery is possible, but it’s not about doing everything perfectly. It’s about showing up with intention, learning what works for your body, and taking one small step at a time.
If you’re just starting (or starting again), take a breath.
You’re not behind.
You’re not broken.
You’re just ready for a better way.
Start by choosing one step from this blog.
And if you’re ready for support that’s personal, not generic, I’d love to help you find what’s holding you back and map a healing plan that works in real life.
